Does NordLayer support the IKEv2 VPN protocol?

      Article summary

NordLayer supports the IKEv2 protocol depending on the context:

      • NordLayer supports IKEv2 for site-to-site configurations. It enables remote connections between different gateways and sites
      • However, from June 1st, 2024, NordLayer apps no longer support the IPSec/IKEv2 as a connection protocol.
      • Moreover, from June 28th, 2025, users connecting via IKEv2/IPSec through manual VPN configuration or older versions of the NordLayer app that still support this protocol will no longer be able to access our servers. That being said, users can still choose other protocols, such as NordLynx or OpenVPN, if they prefer.

The decision to sunset IKEv2 focuses on providing the most secure and adaptable VPN options. While IKEv2/IPSec offers a strong foundation, it can be vulnerable to data leaks in certain scenarios on macOS and iOS. Newer protocols, such as NordLynx, offer greater flexibility for future improvements.

We recommend enabling automatic updates for your NordLayer app to receive the latest security enhancements.
