Set up SWG on Microsoft Edge browser

Intro

NordLayer SWG (Secure Web Gateway) service enables access to resources (mostly SaaS platforms) exclusively via an Internet browser. The secure connection is established by setting up a browser plug-in (extension) or the browser’s settings and is kept within the browser limits - all other Internet traffic goes through the default device network configuration. Once SWG is set up with your gateway, the connection acts the same way as if you were connected via the NordLayer application.

To request the SWG send us an email at support@nordlayer.com

Use cases

  • Device operating system does not support the NordLayer application
  • Multiple NordLayer SWG instances can be set up for different dedicated gateways and used at the same time by utilizing different browsers
  • Encrypted traffic, masked destination and location in a lightweight package
  • Split tunneling effectiveness - SWG traffic on the browser is encrypted, but other resource access the Internet via the device’s default network adapter configuration

Downloading browser extension and configuration file

Windows

Open the NordLayer application and head to Settings. Navigate to the Proxy tab and choose a location (gateway) that you want to use your proxy setup with. Once location is selected, you will now see Proxy server credentials (you need to copy the Username and Password) and a button Configuration files for proxy extensions beneath it. Click on it and in a newly opened window select the browser which you would like to use. In this guide, we will cover the Microsoft Edge usage, so click on the Extension link beneath the Microsoft Edge entry to install a SmartProxy extension for your browser. Once it is installed, select the Download configuration file option on the right side of Microsoft Edge entry.
