# How to find your Windows version number

## What is an operating system version number?

A version number is a unique set of numbers representing the specific release of an operating system.

The Windows OS version number follows the format of major.build.revision. For example, here’s what each number in **10.10240.16405** mean:

- **10** is the major version;
- **10240** is the build version;
- **16405** is the revision version.

If you want your team to use Windows 10 or a later version, enter, for example, 10.10240.16405 in the Device Security Posture Monitor Operating system version field.

To find the Windows version number on your device, you can run the command line winver or check it in the computer properties.
