Proactive IP reputation monitoring and server reachability checks

Prev Next

NordLayer utilizes proactive IP reputation monitoring to ensure optimal service quality and minimize connectivity disruptions, such as unexpected blocks or CAPTCHAs, across our network.

IP monitoring in external databases may not always show real-time conditions, an IP can look clean but still be blocked on certain platforms. To bridge this gap, NordLayer runs its own automated, real-world connectivity checks rather than relying solely on third-party feeds.

How do NordLayer reachability checks work?

Once a day, each NordLayer VPN server automatically sends outbound HTTP requests to a curated list of 20 to 50 popular domains. This list includes widely used web services and domains historically prone to IP flagging, based on customer support data.

By testing these endpoints directly from the servers, our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team can proactively detect and resolve IP reputation issues before they disrupt your organization's daily operations.

What this means for your account and logs

To ensure strict data isolation and security, these automated checks operate under the following parameters:

  • Zero customer data involvement: The checks originate entirely within the VPN server’s system layer. They do not interact with, utilize, or route through any customer account, active session, or user traffic. No connections are made on behalf of users.
  • No impact on activity logs: Because these requests completely bypass user sessions, they do not trigger RADIUS accounting. This activity will never appear in your organization’s activity logs (such as Connections or Failed Logins).
  • Negligible traffic footprint: The daily data volume generated per server varies based on the specific webpages analyzed. While basic sites generate minimal traffic, media-rich pages will drive the volume higher. Overall, this remains a relatively light addition to server-level traffic counters, scaling predictably alongside our standard operational and background telemetry.

Servers with dedicated IPs traffic transparency

If your organization uses servers with dedicated IPs and monitors outbound server telemetry, you may notice some requests from your gateway

This monitoring architecture complies fully with our privacy and legal frameworks. We disclose this activity so your IT administrators can accurately distinguish routine health checks from anomalous network behavior.
